We were starting to get a lot more live football on the TV in the 1990's, so many of our choices below are influenced by that. As well as some cult players, such as Jason Lee, who we just liked because of their odd haircuts, obviously.

Player Favourite Club(s) in the 1990s Why ?
Pavel Nedved Sparta Prague, Lazio Nedved had everything. Pacy, energetic, skillful, great passing with both foot. He could play as a winger or a playmaker. He was just fantastic to watch for Sparta Prague, Lazio and the Czech Republic.

Jean-Pierre Papin Olympique Marseille Remember first seeing Papin in the group stages of the 1986 World Cup and being wholly unimpressed. However, by the early 1990's his form at Marseille had made us eat our words and he deservedly won the Ballon d'Or in 1991.

Lothar Matthäus Inter Milan, Bayern Munich The term midfield dynamo could have been made for Matthäus.
Bernd Schuster Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen Despite turning 30, Schuster's fantastic passing and vision were still as good as ever at Atletico and Bayer Leverkusen.

John Sheridan Sheffield Wednesday, Oldham Athletic Fantastic passer of the ball. A revelation for Sheffield Wednesday after they took him from Notts Forest following his brief period at the City Ground under Cloughie. Had a great swansong at Oldham after David Pleat foolishly ended his Hillsborough career.

Rubén Sosa Lazio, Inter Milan Nicknamed El Principito (The Little Prince) by Uruguayan fans, Sosa was a quick and creative left-footed forward. Great skills and capable of smashing home some long range efforts too.

Roy Wegerle QPR Winner of ITV's 'Goal of the Season' award in 1990-91 for his mesmeric solo goal at Leeds Utd for QPR. At the end of the decade he became one on only two players to play in both the NASL and MLS (the other being Hugo Sanchez).

Darko Pancev Red Star Belgrade His strike rate was phenomenal in the early 1990s, as he banged in 84 goals in 91 games for the incredibly talented Red Star Belgrade team of that era. Pancev scored the winning penalty in the 1991 European Cup Final.
